Good afternoon-
I am writing with regards to a new study abroad program in the German- and Italian-speaking Alpine region of South Tyrol, Italy that is trying to get off the ground starting next year. The program, which is directed by TESOL educator and ethnographic anthropologist Ann Wand, is designed to provide internship opportunities for American students who would like to work and study abroad.
Alpine TEFL/TESOL certificate program
This program is designed to be a one year certificate program for American students interested in obtaining their TEFL/ TESOL certificates. The two semester program (Fall and Spring) is specifically designed with the student in mind. Students will be required at the beginning of the program to sign up for the 'German' or 'Italian' track. This will determine which language they will be studying and will help with their ESL internship placement in either a German- or Italian-speaking school.
The first semester will focus mainly on TEFL/ TESOL courses alongside their language course. The language course will be relevant as students will be required to work alongside non English-speakers during their ESL teaching internships.
In the second semester, students will be assigned in pairs to either a German- or Italian-speaking primary, middle or high school for approximately 3 months. Students will be required to intern about 2-3 days per week and will have weekly evaluations and assessments to monitor their progress. The language and TEFL/TESOL courses will be reduced to make room for the internship element of the program. The idea behind this longer internship is to allow students to be more prepared for the ESL job market should they choose to work abroad in future.
As this program is in the early stages of development, we are looking to start with a smaller group of students of approximately 20 students maximum with the idea of expansion depending on student interest. Our main interest now is learning from the FL Teach community.
